In America, Amir and Baba have an opportunity to forget the past; leave it all behind. As they are influenced by the ideals of America that are education, democracy, and equality, Amir and his father become more accepting of each other. Baba is proud that Amir is such a good student. Amir has dreams and is actually working to achieve them while still being able to take care of Baba. Amir is able to see his father as a fallible human who can become sick and weak. Someone who is not unapproachable. In the past Amir felt that his father was too harsh, now he sees Baba as a man with pride, and the ability to connect with people. He is more proud of his father than before, and without Hassan and the old memories of Pakistan, their relationship is based on the present. Not of past actions they couldn’t control. Though Baba does become sick, which is tragic, being weak is a part of being human. Someone who is too strong is not appealing, humans are meant to be comforted, and by showing weakness, a softer, more positive side of Baba is shown.
In Afghanistan, Amir was constantly reminded of his "sin," since every day, he would come face to face with Hassan. When Amir and Baba moved to America, Amir was able to forget the past and start out with a clean slate. Since Hassan was not present, Amir did not have to worry about having to compete for Baba's attention and praise, nor did he have to battle jealousy. Therefore, Amir was able to spend more time conversing with his father, and strenghthening their bond. When Baba came home from work one evening, Amir noticed his blackened nails, and the oil stains around his shirt. That moment served as a realization for Amir that his father was hard-working and had sacrificed so much for him. At that moment, a huge change occurs, as Amir places his soft hand on top of Baba's rough, worn hand. The moment of connection shows Amir's acknowledgement of Baba's sacrifices. Both Amir and Baba learn to appreciate each other, as Baba reads Amir's stories, as they spend time at the flea market, and as Amir cares for Baba. At one point, Baba even becomes playful with Amir, when Amir asks about Soraya for the first time. The reader can see an immediate connection and a strong bond that has grown between two men that only have each other. Baba's changes were positive because during the last years of his life, they allowed him to show a softer side to Amir. Amir once viewed him as a bear who was intimidating and distant, but in America, Amir realized he was merely a hard-working, kind man. Although Baba often lamented about his past life, I think life in America humbled him and changed him for the better. Even after the changes, the old Baba still shone through, which is important for a positive change.
In Afghanistan, Amir and Baba were not able to have a stable relationship due to Hassan's presence and Baba's badly hidden embarrasment of Amir's sensitivity. The move to America lets the men have some time together and finally understand eachother. Amir's maturity allows for him to understand Baba at a whole new level. He is no longer the son who yearns for his father's love but a man who is capable of questioning his father's decisions.
Baba's changes can be seen as both tragic as well as positive. One may think that Amir is finally getting the appreciation he deserves, but you can also see how Baba is less harsh with Amir because he has decided that his son is a lost cause.
When Amir and Baba move to the US, their whole lives are erased and they are able to start out fresh. Baba starts working at the flea market and gas station and Amir finishes high school and begins college. Amir feels like Baba finally appreciates his hard work and now that Amir is able to forget his haunting past, he can focus on having a good, new life by helping Baba and starting his own family. Amir and Baba also become more comfortable with each other and learn more about their strengths and weaknesses. Amir finally sees Baba's weak side and is there to help him, while Baba is willing to give up everything to help Amir have a good future. Even though Baba is sick, Amir still looks up to him and sees his pride and confidence. Another side of Amir is shown when meets Soraya and instantly falls in love, making Baba even more proud. Baba says Amir's wedding day is one of the most important days of his life, which shows that Baba now cares for Amir so much more. Their relationship grew stronger and more important after their voyage to America.
When Amir and Baba lived in Kabul they lived two separate lives. Amir would always be out playing trying to impress Baba while Baba was locked up in his study being a respected man. The father and son relationship was just not there. When they moved to America respect started to kick in. Amir respected the personality Baba had and Baba started to respect Amir as a good man and an honorable son. This was a huge change also. When Amir and Baba moved to the sates they started fresh. All of their past was gone. Now that they were alone and together they loved each other more. They spent numerous hours at the flea market laughing and bonding like they should. the most evident part of Baba changing was when he respected Amir as a true man and asked for Soraya's hand for him.
I see Baba's change as both tragic and positive. Whe they lived in Kabul Baba was an upper class business man who was highly respected. That is a huge loss that Baba suffered when he became a gas station clerk in America. The positive part about this change was the new slate America offered. Baba had a horrible past and America offered to rid him of it. This alone was the best thing that happened to Baba but it was a high price to pay for it
After moving to the United States, Amir and Baba's relationship changes for the better. Living in America allows any person to be free, start a new life, and let go of the past. Now that Hassan is not present in Amir's life, there is no competition. Amir's mind is not concentrating on whether or not his father is spending more time with himself or Hassan, no jealousy will be hiding within Amir. He does not have to mourn on the past anymore or think about what he has done wrong although he still regrets his actions in the past. Amir's relationship strengthens while he and Baba spend more time together, their friendship bonds not only as father to son, but as friend to friend. Baba and Amir spend a great amount of quality time with eachother that will always be remembered between the two of them. Amir learned things that he would possible had never been able to learn in his lifetime, and he was tought all of these wonderful concepts from Baba. Amirs love for Baba is pure and cannot be replaced. He feels extremely proud of his father.
Amir and Baba reveal the soft sides of eachother, and Baba is beginning to become weak which shows Amir how fallible his father really is; that no human is perfect even his very own father. As young children, most of us seem to think that our parents are super heroes, but that is not true because no one is perfect and everyone has flaws.
As Baba grows weak and ill, Amir begins to take good care of him and their connection contiunes to grow stronger and stronger. The changes in Baba are positive due to the fact that his softer and more affectionate qualities towards Amir are showing. Before, Baba used to be this strong, tough, harsh man but Baba is indeed now the opposite of what he seemed to be to Amir in the past. Therefore the positive change in Baba was a plus to the relationship between the two men.
Baba and Amir's past life in Afghanistan was much different from the life that they are living in America. In Afghanistan, Baba showed more attention and love toward Hassan and did not appreciate having Amir as a son. In his eyes, Hassan was the son of his dreams, and Amir was a failure. After their immigration to America, Amir no longer had to fight for Baba's love anymore. They only close family and friends that Baba and Amir had were eachother. This caused the two to be closer to eachother, and Baba learns to accept that his son is an intellegent student. I think the changes in Baba is more positive, because it taught Baba to be more humble and love Amir for who he is.
Amir and Baba's relationship drastically changes when they come to America because of a few reasons. #1 Baba and Amir can forget their bad pasts because they are basically starting a new life in America...#2 Baba and Amir have to work and live together and help each other because they are in a new country. They have to really get to know each other because of the new struggles of work and adjustment that they face in the beginning of the life in America...#3 The standards for a good accomplished son are different in America than in Afghanistan. Amir knows that he doesn't have to be strong and proud to be a good accomplished man in America. Baba now sees that what Amir does, writing and his school studies, are things that are seen as successful in America. Baba begins to respect Amir for who he is and changes his outlook of Amir.
As Baba changes to respect Amir, Amir begins to see Baba for who he is because he does not have to worry about gaining his fathers love. Plus, everything is easier since Hassan is out of the picture. When Hassan is not there, Amir does not feel like he is in competition and Baba is not reminded of his past.
Baba's changes when he moves to America are both positive and tragic.
They are positive when seen in relation of Amir. He connects more with Amir and Amir feels more loved by Baba. It seems that everything sky rockets when in America. In Amir's eyes, Baba and Amir are finally, for lack of better words, a happy family.
But, his changes are also tragic. This is because though he seems to have connected with Amir more, it is only because of the new country. It is only because the strict pride and "manly" standards that Baba wanted from Amir in Afghanistan, are not necessary in a son in America. It is almost as if Baba gave up on Amir being the son he always wanted, because it doesn't matter any more.
Now that they have come to the united states, they both have to see a different side to life. In Afghanistan, Baba was a figurehead in society and was very influential. At that time, Amir looked up to him as almost immortal. Baba always seemed like a strong man, but he could also be stern and not as approachable. In the United States, Amir has to work hard in school and to make a living. Baba must rely on lower class jobs to survive. This brings out the best in both of them. You see how much pride Baba has and how much dedication Amir has. Both become a lot closer. Baba is focused completely on Amir instead of both Amir and Hassan. At Amir's graduation, it seemed to be one of the best days of Baba's life. He was so happy and proud. The two of them became a lot closer to eachother.
Baba's change becomes positive because of the wider range of acceptance in America. In Afghanistan, only one who is tough and has athletic abilities can be accepted as "a man" in their culture. While in America, one can be "a man of the pen" and still be considered "a man." This receptive American ideology allowed Baba to approve of Amir becoming a writer. America also drew Amir and Baba closer together by making them accept each other faults which separated them in the past.
In America, Baba and Amir more accepting of each other. This allows Amir to notice different aspects of Baba. He notices how Baba appreciates him, graduating. He also notices how much more comfortable they have gotten with each other. After moving to America, Amir views his dad as being more human rather than a superhero type figure. This is because Baba shows several weaknesses such as cancer and a short temper. The changes he goes through are either tragic or positive depending on how you look at them. If you only consider him getting extremely sick, they are changes for the worst. If you consider how much more caring hes gotten towards Amir, they are very positive.
When Amir and Baba were living in Afghanistan, Amir was only able to see his father in two dimension. He could not see any flaws in his father nor realize the true weaknesses that were inside of Baba. When they arrived to America, Baba became more accepting of Amir even though he was interested in literature rather than what was seen right in Baba's eyes. After Baba becomes ill, Amir has to take care of Baba for the first time and finally realizes that everyone, including his "flawless" father can become weak in an instant. He is able to become close to his father in his time of need, always holding his hand and taking care of him. He is able to connect to Baba because of his imperfections and leave behind the old and terrible memories of Afghanistan. Baba changes for the better because he is able to connect with his son on a much higher level. They have much more in common in Baba's few years in America than Amir's whole life in Afghanistan.
When Baba and Amir move to America, their relationship changes. Baba and Amir seem to understand each other better and spend much more time together. This is due to the two only having each other in a foreign country. They only have each other so they are always together and are basically forced to change. Also, Amir is older. Baba accepts Amir's want to become a writer. This change is positive because a boy should get attention from his father, and his father should feel proud and satisfied with his son. It brings more happiness to both.
When Baba and Amir immigrate to America, their relationship undergoes many changes, mostly for the better. These changes are brought about by the radically new environment the father and son are forced into. The main reasons for the changes in their relationship are the absence of Hassan and also the abseonce of the war. Now that Hassan is no longer a part of their lives, Amir does not have to think that Baba does not appreciate or even love him as much as he did Hassan. Because of this, Amir likes to be around his father more. Also, now that they do not experience the war every day, they have more time to spend together and more time to communicate. Amir and Baba become more understanding of each other, and Amir realizes the sacrifices Baba made for him. Baba also begins to appreciate Amir's personality more because America does not value complete masculinity in every aspect of a man's life as much as in Afghanistan. Baba's sickness is very tragic, as Amir believes that his father is the only relative he has left in the world, and would be alone if he died. However, the changes in Baba's personality are extremely positive, and fundamental in deepening his and Amir's relationship. Baba shows that he does appreciate Amir's talents, and almost softens in his expectations of his son. As a result, Amir realizes the love his father contains for him. After the immigration to America, all of these changes in both of their personalities leads to a better, more understanding relationship between the two.
Amir and Baba become much more open with each other. Amir looks out for Baba, like he did when baba went out of control in Mr. Nyugen's store. Baba counts on Amir to bring in the money and to drive to the market after he develops cancer. Most of all, they have a friendly relationship. Baba gave Amir advice on what to do about his feelings for Soraya and called up General Taheri to arrange the marriage later.
I see the changes that Baba makes in his relationship with Amir positive. However, he develops cancer and this is a bad change.
After moving to America, Baba and Amir get along much better. There is not as much tension in their relationship like there was when they were living in Afghanistan. Baba didn't really understand Amir, and in response Amir was constantly fighting for Baba's love and acceptance. Now in America, the two become closer partly because they don't have anyone else that they can connect to or rely on. In that way they are sort of forced to become closer. Also, Baba becomes more proud of Amir. He accepts Amir's aspiration of becoming a writer and the person he is becoming to be. Because of this, I think Baba's change is positive. He becomes more understandable and loving towards Amir.
After moving, Amir sees more to Baba than his being serious and preoccupied with everything except his son. Amir notices that Baba is now more open with him, talking to him on an everyday basis about a range of matters. Baba also has more pride in his son's abilities in writing, where before he was disappointed.
These changes are positive because they result in a closer relationship between Amir and Baba. Before, they would seldom talk to each other and knew almost nothing about the other person. Now, Amir and Baba know who each is on a more personal level.
I think that Amir started to grow up. He began to get out of his father's shadow. For example, picking an english major against Baba's wishes. He viewed Baba differently. Also, they got a closer relationship by working together. And when Baba fell ill, Amir realized how precious he was. It was a positive change.
After Amir and Baba move to the United States, Amir begins to view his father in a different light. Here in America, all Amir and Baba had were each other, making them learn how to rely on each other rather than the people they left behind such as Ali, Hassan, and Rahim Khan. Baba became closer to Amir and realized that his son was not a coward and Amir could stand up for himself when he wanted. For example, Amir stood up to Baba when Baba kept insisting that Amir become a lawyer or a doctor when what Amir really wanted to become was a writer. Additionally, Amir has realized Baba is like a tortured soul in America, trying to live with a job as a manager at a gas station and and being incapable of speaking English. Both had to make adjustments to make ends meet and all the while, they learned more about each other. Baba began to appreciate Amir and his achievements rather than look down. Amir finally saw that Baba was not always the strong man he appeared to be and that he could break down. These changes in Baba were tragic in some ways while positive in others. When Baba developed cancer, that was obviously tragic and showed Amir that he was going to have to learn to take charge. On the other hand, when Baba became the weaker one in their relationship, he learned that his son had become a strong man who had learned to stand up for himself.
